epoxy syringes

I know pharmacy syringes have the dreaded silicone in them, but my question is, is there anyway to wash this silicone out to make the syringes usable?

Barry's right, the ones sold for our use don't have any rubber or silicone in the plunger and are just a couple bucks. I've had the same pair for years so they don't wear out. I used some earlier versions with black rubber (or silicone) in the plunger and over time the black stuff started getting into my finish. It's best to eliminate problems in the process where we can.

You can clean them by washing with alcohol, but once you do that the rubber plungers tend to want to stick in place or drag terribly when you push or pull the plunger. In short, without the silicone, they won't work very well (which is why they have the silicone lube there to begin with).

Good question because the one I just got to give the baby his medicine has no rubber/silicone on the plunger, it looks exactly like the ones I get from mudhole except a little bigger.

Thanks for the replys. The reason I was asking was because a buddy of mine picked me up a case of 150 sets at a surplus store. Just seems like such a waste.

Barry,
I suggest that you try a set to see how it goes mixing up some small batches of finish and using it on test rods.

The reason that I suggest this is that I have been using such syringes for years with no issues at all.

I just take the syringes, fill them with either part A or part B finish - depending on the mark that I make on the syringe and the dump out the contents.
I do this a couple of times, basically using the finish to clean the inside of the syringe.

Then, I just use my syringes in my setup which means that I just drop the syringes in a marked test tube so that I don't have to clean them out when finished.

I rather suspect -if there is any silicone on the syringe that it gets rinsed away with the first load of finish and then any remaining tends to remain entrapped under the first load of finish that stays in the syringe.

If you anticipate trouble and aren't willing to test - then don't use the syringes.

As I said, I wouldn't use any finish that is applied by the first load of finish into such a syringe, but after the first load, I would have very little concern about an issue.

Good luck -

p.s.
Test before trying on a good rod.

Roger

I have been using medical syringes since 1972. There is no danger of contamination of your epoxy by using them. The amount of silicone is so miniscule it wont have any effect on your finish. You are more likely to contaminate your finish by using wood sticks. Us a good quality SS spatula for mixing and clean it with acetone after each use and you wont have any problems.

Additionally, with that many on hand, aren't they simply disposable? Use once; throw away. I would think with a single use, contamination would be minimal, to the point of unnoticeable. A simple test run should confirm this.
