I have aquired a "Hurricane" 6 1 / 2 ' solid glass rod made in Fla. It had 3 Alan guides & tip-top wrapped in purple w / gold stripes the solid clear glass blank goes thru the wood handles plus what looks like a stainless reel seat with dual lock rings .
What I want to do is place 7 Black chrome Pac Bay guides & tip-top (size 20 stripper followed by 2 - 16 2- 12 2 - 10 & 16 / 10 tip-top) Retain original reel seat & wood grips (checkering the fore grip with non-skid coating) The whole thing powered by a Penn Long Beach 66 convrentional reel filled with 30 # to 50 # mono to 50 # Cajun (American made) red braid plus a 50 # mono leader . will this be a suitable Tilefish rig ? Any options ? Thanks Larry Re: Tilefish rod re-build ?

What about a Spiral Wrap
The only reason to use a 20 would be if the line hits your hand when you have a fish on For height If you line and knots go though 8s maybe 16-12- or 10 then 8s You will have to check Bill - willierods.com Re: Tilefish rod re-build ?

Unless you are looking to get by as cheaply as possible I wouldn't consider either the rod or reel up to the task. The rod weighs a ton for its power (by today's standards). The gear ratio is painfully slow on the reel and it's drag washers are very small.
You could get a cheap gator glass blank and an old 6/0 senator quite cheaply. You would be much better off IMHO. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: Tilefish rod re-build ?

Well Larry, of course it will work. It is just sometimes our labor is too valuable to bother working on a poor platform. I tend to factor in the cost of the trip and multiply by my aches and pains. I'm at the point where it makes sense to pay a little more for my tackle.
Being from the Miami area I fished a few Hurricane rods in my time. They were sorta a budget blank but I felt they were better than eagle claws but not as nice as the garcia's. The long beach is a rugged reel and was a favorite of the party boats. I caught a decent sized wahoo on one so the drag is certainly up to tilefish. Have fun with your project. I envy you guys with the size of your tilefish. Russ in Hollywood, FL. Re: Tilefish rod re-build ?

one BIG problem
You don't want to put mono under the braid. The first time the braid just above the mono get any reasonable pull on it, it will dig into the mono creating a lovey midspool birds nest. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
