Hi William,
It's often best to go with a size that suits your hand so you need to get hold of them and see what suits you. The id of the seat needs to be large enough to fit over the blank. If there is a big difference between id of the seat and od of the blank then a foam arbor is the best method to make up the difference. Small differences can be made up with masking tape. If you use tape make sure it's completely covered with epoxy to prevent water from getting at it. Make sure the reelseat will accomodate the reel you are going to use. If you have got fairly large hands then an 18 might be best and they will take a lot of diferent sized reel feet. It's really up to your individual preferences and the blank od where the reel will go. If the rod is going to be in your hand for long periods with a lot of casting then a seat that fits well in your hand is fairly important. ESFNEM Col Port Kembla, NSW Australia Re: SIZE OF REEL SEATS

I would suggest a 17. Seems to be the most comfortable for me and I have large hands. Rolly Beenen Rovic Custom Rods Re: SIZE OF REEL SEATS

Col makes a great point. You often see small grips on light rods, but the shape of your hand doesn't change with the rod you fish. It's really okay to use a size 17 or 18 reel seat on a light rod, even though you see a lot of 16's on the ultralight rods in the store.
Building a rod to fit the angler's grip is one of the custom aspects of our craft. Terry Re: SIZE OF REEL SEATS

You'll notice that a set of golf clubs carries the same size grip on each club. There is a good bit of sense in sizing all your reel seats the same, regardless of what size or power rod you're working with.

X10 on Bill's comment about the use of the Aero spinning reel.
This seat has become my client's reel seat of choice. It is particularly nice that American Tackle has recently come out with a size 17 seat. I always mount these reel seats with in an uplocking mode, or the threads pointed toward the tip. Then, I take a grip and size it so that the top 1/4 inch is a nice tight fit on the inside of the reel seat. This leave a perfect palm swell for the hand and a nice comfortable feel for the back of the hand, if your hand slides down the grip a bit. Be safe Roger Edited 1 time(s). I am with Roger and Bill on this.I was using the Fuji VSS seats but it was to hard to make my own cork grips to suit. The aero seats are
comfortable and a pleasure to use.Havent used the size 17 yet.And i prefer uplocking as i hold the rod above the reel. cheers Ray Balmforth Figtree NSW Australia Re: SIZE OF REEL SEATS

There was a builder that turned that seat around
Don't know how it felt Try it before gluing it on to see how you like it ??? Bill - willierods.com Re: SIZE OF REEL SEATS

I have tried it both ways and it seems to me that you basically give up much of the advantages of the Aero seat, if you don't have the butt grip next to the large end of the reel seat.
