We just uploaded a new short video to youtube that we will soon have on our website. This video shows our technique on how to make a recessed hood for a fly rod out of cork rings. We know there is more than one way to skin a cat, but we would like to show you how we do it.

Thanks for posting that video. I build mine the same way except for the board with the hole to hold the cork. I will make me one now. I was fortunate that I lived close to Roger's home while he lived in Houston and spent a few nights getting tuttored in rod building back in '79 and '80. Roger was never too busy to help me when I called on him. Tell him that I said "hey". Re: New Short Video from Flex Coat

Cool. Since I don't have a drill press, I use my lathe.
I mount the cork to be recessed in my chuck and select the correct size forstner bit to get the flat bottom hole. If I don't have exactly the right size, I cut a tad smaller hole, then expand with a round file as the ring is spinning on the lathe. Takes about 3-5 minutes. If I used a lot of recessed hoods, I like the suggestion of modifying a spade bit as Roger did, and may look into that. I like the Amtak window seats on many of my fly rods so I can modify a spade bit to fit without the additional shaving I'm doing now. Great video and thanks for posting.
