Delta has a carry-on size restriction of 22" in length. Back in the day, I carried longer tubes. Nowadays, it isn't worth the chance that someone would stop me and enforce the rules. I just ship items ahead OR take shorter tubes. It will vary by airlines, airports, gate agents and flight attendants. One thing that is 100% sure, there are no consistent standards being applied by the TSA or air carriers. Re: airline travel

I've taken on 54 x 3 inch tubes a bunch of times--but always on Alaska Airlines. They are used to it and they understand.
For other carriers, you may have to gate check. That isn't a bad thing, but you have less control. Funny-I always carry with me to Alaska, and then always mail home at the post office just to not to have to mess with it. Re: airline travel

They should let you take it to the gate. At the gate when you are boarding they will take it and put in the baggage department. When you arrive at your destination you just wait in the bridge and they will give it back to you. I travel everywhere for work and that is how I know this stuff. The only way to get the answer to your ? is to call the airline that you are going to fly on. They're all different and change often.

Living in Montana, I see people getting off the plane with 3 & 4 piece rod tubes all the time. I routinely carry one or two 30" rod cases when I travel, and have never been questioned. Last year I took a 33" case as a carry-on piece from here to Nicaragua, which involved plenty of small planes. I think that these days, with everyone trying to jam oversized luggage into small bins to avoid baggage checking fees, rod cases are the last thing flight attendants worry about.
