Apologies for such a mundane topic but I need to move a reel seat on a friend's rod. It is a Shimano Tallus, Ulua series & said friend is unhappy with the casting. I suggested heating it with a hair dryer (has worked for me once on a blank) & seeing if it rotated. No go. The hope was that if it moved he could cut the grip off below the seat & reglue. Does anyone have any cunning tips? It is a bought rod so I have no ideas on type of glue used.
I'd like to add what a tremendous resource this forum is. I build a few blanks once a year when I go to the US to see my brother so I'm no expert but it makes a huge difference knowing help is an email away. Simon. Re: Reel Seat Removal.

Heating the epoxy to the point where it will release will generally also melt the resin that holds the blank together. And these epoxies do not act like hot melt cement - once softened they do not re-harden and re-adhere.
Sometimes setting the butt section in a pan of boiling water will do the trick, without harming the resin that holds the blank together. Otherwise, you spiral cut the seat, pop it off, and install a new one. ............. Re: Reel Seat Removal.

The boiling water trick has worked every try for me on production rods...6 times or so. Generally, I find that they are only attached in a VERY few contact points. Its kind of alarming actually. Re: Reel Seat Removal.

If all else fails go the dremel and spiral cut but be careful.

Simon,
I just chuck an abrasive cut off disk in a Dermal tool. I run one slice down one side of the reel seat. Then, another slice down the other side of the reel seat. Insert a screwdriver in the slot, twist it, and pop the reel seat off the rod in two pieces. Of course, when making the slice, I cut almost through, but not quite through the reel seat. The twisting of the screwdriver will complete the break in the reel seat with no issue about nicking the blank. About a minute or two to take care of the reel seat. Roger Re: Reel Seat Removal.

I do a spiral cut but with a hand saw. I control it better also control better the risk of make an acidental cut in the blank.
