I need suggestions for a 6' blank...

A friend broke a rod the other day that isn't readily available commercially. It was a 6' spinning rod with a heavy action (1/4 to 1 oz). (He prefers the shorter length for smallmouth fishing in a kayak.) He is not looking for a high end replacement. St Croix makes an SCII casting blank that would work (2C60MHF) but I am wondering if there are other options. Also, I have never tried trimming the butt section of a blank. Is cutting 6" off the butt end of a RainShadow RX-7 IMB 784 a viable alternative? (I was once told that you could cut 4" and it wouldn't make a huge difference, but 6"?) Any advice would be appreciated.

If you're looking at the 2C60MHF, you may want to look at the Batson SB723 (RX6 5/16 to 3/4 oz.). I have built several of these and never had a complaint. Great price on the blank too.
I don't know that there is an exact formula for how much you can cut off the butt of a blank. Sorry I can't help with that. Re: I need suggestions for a 6' blank...

Hi Hunter,
Four inches off the butt can alter the blank signicantly, depends on the blank. As you've never done it before I'd suggest you cut one inch off at a time and check the result. I've cut up to 18 inches off a blank and it turned that one into something I like and enjoy using. Obviously the more you cut off the more you change the line rating and the less power you will have. Depends on what your after and what's available in the desired price range. ESFNEM Col Port Kembla, NSW Australia Re: I need suggestions for a 6' blank...

Hunter -
Talon has a 6 foot blank and they are sold through Angler's Workshop as their house brand. I am building one to throw lures 1/2 oz to 1 oz. Tony Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
