New builder ferrules

Hello all,
I'm New to rod building. Saw a Fenwick fl 102 9 and had to build one. Most looks pretty straight forward except the ferrule. Can you purchase the oversleeve ferrules or do you make them with and old blank scrap? And can yellow ones be had to match the blank? Thanks for any info. Been fun so far! Doug

Is this a two piece rod? The ferrules should be made as part of the rod blank.

Doug,
Are you mistaking the thread wraps on the tip of the female section of blank for a ferrule? If so, I think Tom has an article with guidelines for such wraps, and they are generally necessary to reinforce the female end of the tip section.

If you are unsure call the supplier and ask about them

Like tom said they should be part of the blank Tip over Butt

Thanks. I think this rod was modified at some point but it measures 102... As marked. It had a ferrule but wasnt right, ineed to customize. But i think i understand that the ferrule should be same as blank due to the flex of the rod. I could send a pic. And maybe you could see my delima. Again thanks for your thoughts. Doug

When you say it "had a ferrule" what do you mean? A metal ferrule?

Bill,
It's is an old Fenwick. Got it off @#$%&. Didn't pay much so if nothin else it will be a great learning curve. (learned a heck of a lot already, startin to worry bout the wife though! ...The rod is really in pretty good condition but again it's the Ferrule issue. Do the blanks bought new for building have a ferrule or is it somehow cut from the blank itself? Honestly may be a little rough now but it will be treasure when I'm finished wit it! As soon as I get schooled in the blank and connection methods. :) D

The ferrule is integral - the tip fits over the butt. There is no additional part required.

How old is your Fenwick?

Problably late 60s early 70s these were pre FF brown blanks I believe. I made an over sleeve from another rod but its not yellow. Fits really good I think it will work but I'd like yellow. D

I did some searching, and I have seen pictures of the Fenwick 102 with both tip over butt Ferrules, and with spigot ferrules. I finally found a site that has some history of these rods, and the light came on. It seems that when Fenwick first started selling blanks, they wanted a way to know if the rod was made at the factory, or if it was a custom rod made from one of their blanks. The factory made fly rods were marked with an FF, and the blanks they sold for custom rods were marked with an FL. The early factory Fenwick fly rods were built with a metal ferrule that incorporated a rubber O-ring. The blanks that they sold to custom builders during this time were all one piece, and it was up to the builder to decide what type of ferrule to use. Once Fenwick went to the Feralite tip over butt ferrules, both the factory made rods, and the blanks they sold were made with this ferrule system.

I think Doug has a blank that was one of the early ones and was sold as a one piece blank. Someone cut the blank, and now Doug needs a way to make a nice looking ferrule for his rod.

Mike, thank you! It had a gray colored spigot type ferrule but it was to short and went right into the open glass top part of the rod .. Not a good set up. Dont know how it even stayed together. Been lookin at what others have done with FL rods. Dont know if they may have painted a ferrule or went to the trouble of actually finding a yellow piece?

Doug: Do a Google search for Fenwick fl 102, and then click on the Google Images. You will see pictures of these rods with a number of different ferrules from over sleeve, to spigot, to tip over butt. I don't know if the builders bought 2 blanks, and cut one of them to make the yellow pieces for the spigot, or over sleeve or not. Spigot type ferrules actually appear on some good rods. Don't rule it out.

Mike,
Yes, I've seen some of these rods. Very nice work on most. It seems theres not a lot of info on this process (ferrule crafting) or I'm searching in the wrong area. I'll keep researching. Thanks again. Tight lines! Doug

Doug: I am sure that some of the guys will chime in on how to do this. I understand the basics of the process. but have never done it, and don't know the pros and cons of the different types of ferrales.

Thanks to all who helped with this topic on Fenwick rod FL102 9. Finally Finished the rod last week , looks great! I figured out the ferrule. Used a piece of an old rod approx. 5 inches and it worked very well as an over sleeve ferrule. This being my first rod I learned much about the process and can't wait to start another! Again, thanks to all of you on the forum and Tight Lines! Doug .
