I need to send a 7ft one piece spinning rod from Michigan to Florida. What do you find to be the way to go----USPS or UPS?
Thanks, Herb Re: USPS or UPS

You choose. Prices are similar. Be sure to have insurance with either carrier. Insure it for the full retail customer price as well. Don't just insure it for the cost of components. After all, it is a finished product and is worthy of the insurance value.

Herb,
As long as your rod is shipped in something to give it reasonable protection, you will be in good shape, unless it gets run over, or unless it gets caught in a conveyor. No container will likely hold up under either of these events. That is why it is important to have adequate insurance on every rod that you ship. Roger Re: USPS or UPS

I have had good experiences with all 3 of the major shippers. As mentioned earlier, be sure you pack the item securely in a sound tube or carton and insure it. I have never had to collect on the insurance, maybe lucky. Re: USPS or UPS

I just sent a 8' gaff from Houghton Lake Michigan to Clearwater Florida. UNPS wanted $90, UPS $24 and FEDX wanted 18. It wasn't a tough choice. The difference between 7 'and 8' made a huge difference with UNPS, so make sure that the total lenght of your package is within UNPS limits. Re: USPS or UPS

Rufus,
I think that he means USPS - or us post office. I had the same issue when it came time to ship some 8 foot rods. Huge difference in cost between post office and the other carriers. The other carriers had their big price break at lengths greater than 8 feet. The us post office has its price break between 7 and 8 feet. Roger Re: USPS or UPS

LOL, I knew what he was talking about but most people don't repeat typos three times in a row. I thought maybe it was a joke or a jab at USPS that I was missing. Rufus Port Saint Lucie, FL Re: USPS or UPS

I have gotten 35 or so rod shippments from USPS either from Midwest Rod & Reel or the Batson facility in Washington to my location in Tennessee. I can get the rod shipment faster than I can get a letter. 3 days sometimes 2 days. Go figure. Re: USPS or UPS

We pretty much use USPS Priority Mail all the time.
No surcharge for residential pickup or delivery Free boxes Online shipping is up to 15% less Claims are handled very quickly when you purchase online - everything is submitted online - no postmaster We have never had the USPS inconvenience a customer by wanting to get statement, arrange for repickup, etc when there was a claim The main issue we have on occasion is rural route deliveries can't fit a tube in the car so the customer has to pick up the rods or blanks. Only once has USPS been more than a week (last week on one, but UPS ran the same delivery and had the same issue the week before). Usually they are in the 2-3 day window We have a much higher claim % with UPS than with USPS and claims inconvenience customers. Mike,
I know that you would not have shipped a nice rod without getting tracking numbers, delivery confirmation and insurance. So, what does your tracking numbers say where the rod is located right now? The tracking is very good with all carriers. You just have to pay a few cents extra on USPS to have the tracking numbers available for you to track.
