I'm building a freshwater rod for a friend of mine. It'll be a Batson Rainshadow 7' XSB-842 blank. I know the number of guides, and spacing is not a problem. The question i have is, is there any way to determine the size of the guides i'll be to use without buying the whole set which is quite costly? There are ways to figure the number and spacing of the guides, but i don't see anything to help with the sizing other than the choker guide. Like i said i really don't want to buy the whole set if i don't need to. Thanks for any help in advance.

Go to the Batson web site where they have a recipe for each blank, it's a good starting point. You can modify as you see fit from there.

Use the smallest guides that pass the line and any connections that may be pulled through the guide.

Go to the Library of this site and read "New Guide Concept - Spinning Rods." If planning to use Fuji guides, go to their site Anglers Resource - Fuji (click the link in the left margin) and try their new GPS software. Both are very good resources-following them will result in great rods.
