Has anyone had any luck refinishing or touching up areas where the epoxy has seperated around the guide neck or is rewrapping the only way to get a decent result? Re: Refinish vs. Rewrap

Your rod? Try it. I'm going to be doing the same thing very soon to one of my own. I had a rod damaged by a man falling just before docking and he landed in a group of rods. I noticed the chip when cleaning the rod. I have done it before and had no problems and I will do it again. Just my personal experience. Re: Refinish vs. Rewrap

try touching it up first. if there is a bit of excess epoxy that goes up the guide leg, trim it off with small sharp knife first, this way the new epxoy doesn't have to fill up too much and also doesn't add to the bulkyness of the epoxy area. also the higher up the leg you go the more chance that it will happen again, especially in an overhead style rods.don't forget to clean the leg the best you can with some rubbing alchahol. use cotton tip
let us know how you go. tight lines. Re: Refinish vs. Rewrap

Mike,
I never even try. It only takes a few minutes more to strip off the guides, that I just take the stripping route. Any time that you try to touch up, you almost always have some sort of a joint or gap showing that doesn't match, but do what suits you. Roger Re: Refinish vs. Rewrap

I think the main issue is the structure. Is the guide still solidly attached? If yes, then retouching with rod finish epoxy should be fine. Buff up the existing finish with Scotchbrite, then refinish. I've done it many times and have had no complaints. If the guide is loose, I would rewrap. Sometimes you can match the wrap quite well, other times not so well. If your color match is not to your liking, rewrap the whole rod. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
