Just a thought but has any one ever added glitter to rod varnish before applying it. If any one has tried it I would love to know the out come, Thanks.

Paul,
I've mixed glitter in finishes before and tried to sprinkle it on a finish and wasn't pleased with the results. At times it will clump up no matter how fine the flakes are and it is difficult to control the density (number of particles / square cm). What I've found is better is to apply the finish and then "puff" (blow softly in bursts) on the glitter off the palm of your hand or a piece of paper. Doing this you will always be able to see the effect and add more if needed - you can also add different colors to different sections by protecting one area while blowing on a different color. Remember that the glitter will fly beyond your target so use a backdrop to contain any overage.

I use ultra-fine glitter from craft stores with two-part epoxy finish. Mix a little glitter in with one part of your finish, then add other part. A little goes a long way. You will usually want a finish coat over the glitter coat.

I agree with Chuck, I had to experiment to find a good way to do it (and wouldnt you know that after I got it figured out I never actually used it on a rod).

I've used it on 4 rods. Of these, one with gold powder over dark green thread to match a Curado E7, and one fellow wanted me to match the red metal flake on his Ranger.

I have added a small amount to Threadmaster high build with great results. Just stir it in real well. It does not take much. I used ultra fine glitter from Michael's crafts... "Stampendous crystolescent " ultra fine. Lavender is my favorite... Test it out before you put on the finish. and again, It does not take very much...

Use it all the time, extra fine from Jannsnetcraft, don't need much, add to the 2 part before mixing and mix the normal way, depending on on thick you lay the epoxy on, you may need a second light coat to make the finish smooth feeling.

I have had my best rods turn out when using colors like Pearl and Lavender with the best results coming by first putting a coat of clear epoxy on your guide wrap and take a small bit between your fingers and thumb and simply add the glitter to your guide wrap while it is wet and the rod is turning. I use the ultra fine glitter that you can find in most craft stores and by fine I mean the finest you can get and you do not need much as it really does shine. After you put the glitter on the guides you will want to let it simply turn and dry and only after it is dry give it one more coat of epoxy and that should do it.
