Don't worry about the temps and just go ahead and finish the rod. It doesn't matter what the outside temp is unless you're finishing outside or in a non-climate controlled environment. Even then the finish will come out fine (it'll just take longer for it to set in cold weather and it'll take a shorter time in hot weather). Finish the thing and don't over-think it.

The internet is a great medium for discussion, but that discussion does have a tendency to overwhelm those who are new to the "sport".

OK, guys. Sunday evening the first coat of finish goes on the guides. I'll probably need to put a second coat on Tuesday evening. Thanks for all of your opinions.

Jay it appears that the Internet is the "sport" not rodbuilding.

Out of sight but not out of mind!

Before it scrolls off the first page -

Gees, Bill, I thought I posed a legitimate concern. I've never built a rod in the summer. This is one of the few places I can turn to for help.

Bruce your question is very good -

My post was aimed at the "answers"!

Good answers and Bad Answers all appear.on Internet Forums.

The real problem is which one does someone who seeks the "truth" believe!

Problems you have with finish are not are not caused by humidity -

I live in Baton Rouge - work in a small outside shop - most of the time in the summer the humidity is 80% or better - I do multiple rods five days a week - temperature in the finishing area can be a help or a hindrance - learn the proper of the finish you are working with - mix it properly - get it in place fast - keep it turning to dry to tack and you will be a winner - if you wait too long between coats yo must scuff to insure a bond.

If you have specific problem and need information call me at 225-931-0193 anytime and I will be glad to talk you through the entire process.

Hi Bill. I appreciate the offer. I just finished applying the first coat. I learned quickly that the finish sets up faster in the summer. I'm never satisfied with my finish talents, but sometimes I think I'm way too critical of myself. I see things I can improve that most people probably don't even notice. My first coat isn't perfect but I think it is good enough. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again,
Bruce
