I have some one piece fly rod blanks. I have never used them before.I want to use spigot ferrules. My question is in Clements book Fiber Glass Rod Making he says to wrap the ferrule location before cutting the blank leaving a 3/8 gap between them. In Tom Kirkman's book Rod-building Guide he says to wrap right next to the end. In order to do this I think I would have to cut the blank first. What is the correct way to do this?
Thanks Gary Re: Spigot Ferrules

You can follow Dale's instructions and then once everything is cut and you have the spigot fitted, you make a thread reinforcement wrap on both pieces, making sure to wrap snugly, close to the ends.
What you're trying to do is prevent a split-out from occurring at the edge of the cut pieces. The reinforcement wrap will do that provided you make it snug and go very close to the edges. Within say, 1 mm. ............... Re: Spigot Ferrules

OK Now I am confused. In Clements book it said to double wrap leave a gap and cut. Now how do I get a double wrap with only 1/8 inch or less showing. Would it not be easer to cut the rod put in the spigot than wrap. Re: Spigot Ferrules

I have not read Clements instructions. I would just make the cut, install the ferrule and then make two wraps, one on the end of each piece. Re: Spigot Ferrules

I may need to recall Dale's instructions myself for that matter. Cut the blank at your desired location. Fit and install the ferrule, glue it up, then make a reinforcement wrap at the each of the cut ends.
Depending on your ferrule sizing, that may be all you need to do. If you can't get the 1/8 to 3/16 inch wear allowance gap, then trim a tiny bit more from the female ferrule until you do. Then make the reinforcement wraps. ................ Re: Spigot Ferrules

What material do you use to make that kind of ferrule ? Scrap piece of blank ?
Thanks, Pierre Re: Spigot Ferrules

Yes, fiberglass.
