Sense I have been using Chroma Seal I have had trouble with my epoxy finish migrating to the center of the guides and my butt wraps look like they have speed bumps. I have been building rods for a long time and have never run in to this problem before. Can any anyone shed some light on this pain in the, "you know what"? Re: migrating epoxy

I wish I could help you but I cannot. This same problem has plagued me on more than one occasion. Usually with Aftcote but not always. No matter how many times I relay the coating it returns to the middle of the wrap. If I remove the lump in the center, it reforms leaving even less on the outer edges of the wrap. Odd. But it does not always happen. Re: migrating epoxy

Sounds like you are putting your epoxy on too heavy. That will cause a "football" to form. It has happened to me and always on the tiptop. I've also had the lumpy finish on the split grip and cured it with cutting back on the amount of epoxy I applied with the first coat. Re: migrating epoxy

Are you rotating your epoxy via a dryer device? With a thinner viscosity product like the ThreadMaster Light (Chromaseal is a color preserver, not an epoxy finish) a fast rotation speed can result in the finish pulling in towards the center of the wrap.

It is the same thing with me. It isn't every rod but a lot of them. It has never happend w/ U-40 color lock or any other I have ever used for that matter. Re: migrating epoxy

I don't think it has to do w/ the amount Light or heavy it does the same. It was worse w/ thread master but did not happen all the time.
I know Chromaseal is a color preserver and I rotate my rods on the Flex Coat turners like I have always done. I think they are about 8rpm. Re: migrating epoxy

I'm sure I am using the finish properly. I think changing the color preserver would be best bet. I have changed to Pro Kote finish and still have the same problem. Re: migrating epoxy

I have found with some CP's that thinning them helps them to work better. But ya got to put on more coats

I expect that if you used no CP your problem would go away.

Yes Roger that is correct. The problem never happens w/ ncp. Re: migrating epoxy

Bill I have slightly thinned it before and tried other things, warming, stirring for several minutes. Same results.

Super thin multiple coats will fix our issue.
