Flex coat slip clutch design?

I always like to know how things work. Has anyone taken one of the Flex Coat slip clutches and chucks apart to understand the design.
I am guessing that the clutch is simply a spring loaded set of double washers to allow the chuck to slip. But I would like to confirm that. It seems that one could make such a chuck for about 25 cents if that is the case. Thanks for anyones help. Roger Re: Flex coat slip clutch design?

It works like the sprocket on a silent bicycle hub.

Thanks for the thoughts.
For anyone that owns one of the flex coat clutches, is the clutch a one way slip clutch design? i.e. will the clutch slip in only one direction, or will it slip in both directions? If it is a spring loaded plate clutch, it would slip in both directions. But if it were a spring wound shaft clutch, it would only slip in one direction. Thanks for your thoughts. After doing some more checking, it would seem, that if one wanted to make your own dryer slip clutch, that one of these spring loaded clutches would the the solution.
[www.rinomechanical.com] Of course the simplest solution is to buy the completed flex coat chuck, clutch and coupling, but it is always a satisfying thing to figure out how things work. Roger Re: Flex coat slip clutch design?

That would work if what your were mating up to was male by male. You need a female by male Re: Flex coat slip clutch design?

I have always want to make one with magnets. Seem like the simplest mechanical drive.

If one wanted to make one then magnetic slip clutch assemblies as used in copier machines would work as well as anything and would slip in either direction. Probably available in quantity from closeouts on one of the @#$%& sites. Personally I find it easier to just use my wrapper & move the rod to a dryer after finish has been applied. Barry,
The reversing switch on your power wrapper is a common 4-way house hold switch. It is essentially a cross coupled double pole double throw switch with no center off. Roger p.s. These switches are available in any Home Depot, big box, or electrical supply shop. Re: Flex coat slip clutch design?

Ken,
I recently began using a different power supply for my power wrapper that has a NON spring loaded foot pedal. ie. the foot pedal stays where I leave it. So, if I am only buiding a single rod per day as opposed to many rods, I will build the rod, align the guides, put the rod back on the wrapper apply the finsih at any speed desired, stopping it whenever it is required, and then when ready - simply leaving the foot pedal on the power wrapper in the necessary posititon to give the rod the required drying speed. Or, if the dryer is full and this is the last rod of the day, I use the wrapper for the overnight drying. No rod transfer necessary. I take the rod off the wrapper the next morning and put it in a stand for a final 24 hour setup of the finish before packing and shipping. Roger Re: Flex coat slip clutch design?

Roger
The Flexcoat Slip Clutch has a rubber/neoprene diaphragm approximately 1/8 inch thick This diaphragm has a hole in it which, grips the rod by friction. Holding the rod and preventing it from rotating, causes the clutch to slip by over coming the friction. Click on this link to see the rubber diaphragm.
