We were in Jo-anns Fabrics today and they have the Clear Plastic Thread Storage boxes on sale 50% off about $3.50 ea

I use the largest size disposable plastic containers ... Glad, Ziploc, etc.

Not a bad idea.
I use the same 3600 Plano boxes that I use for my fishing supplies. Thread fits perfectly into these boxes.
Also, guides fit into the boxes perfectly as well. Easy to see through and I generally pay $2.50 to $3.00 each for them.

Have to love plastic boxes for all of the wonderful things that you can do with them, whomever the vendor, or the configuration.

It has been a while since I have bought any boxes, because a few years ago I bought a large quantity at a severely reduced price.
But at the local Fleet Farm down the street here is a set of 4 of the boxes for $12 .50 or $3.13 each:

You can also try shopping some of the big box stores for similar prices.
