Has anyone ever tried using scaled fish skin as a decoration under finish as I have seen snake skin used. Re: fish skin as decor

If you want an easy way to do that, it is possible, with limitations, to get a good look from photos of fish pasted onto white stick-on decal media. Since computers don't print silver well, and silver or hologram media doesn't do a good job on fish, you need a good quality photo up close of a fish that doesn't have a lot of silver in its colors, like perch, smallmouth, brook trout, brown trout, probably a lot of the salt water bottom fish.
It is hard to get that quality photo, but with practice it can be done. Sizing it is somewhat important to get the pattern life size. I'll post a pic of a brook trout and perch pattern that I did. [www.rodbuilding.org] [www.rodbuilding.org] Re: fish skin as decor

Kevin, here's another example of what you can do to achieve the look you're after. This was done on white backed decal paper. If I were to do it again I would use clear backed decal paper with an underwrap of pearl white thread.

Chad,
I like them all but the Crappie decal is super! Thanks for sharing the pics and the info. Looking forward to trying one myself. Ray Mazza Utica, NY Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/11/2011 07:11PM by Ray Mazza. Re: fish skin as decor

Yes it is possible. Do you have a source for skin?

Check out Members Galleries for Owen DARE. He did up a rod using fish skin in the handles which came out stunning and very different. He sourced the fish leather from an Aussie site.

I was hoping to use the skin from the redfish I catch. I get plenty so I would have many to play around with. I would be happy to go through the trial and error process if I knew it could be done. Re: fish skin as decor
