Doe's anyone see a problem with wrapping a small folding hook keeper to the bottom of a double foot guide wrap. It would be on the butt guide and use the same wrap for the guide and hook keeper.
Thanks for your thoughts, Larry Re: hook keeper

Question: WHY? That close why not use the guide itself? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/29/2011 09:49PM by Phil Erickson. Re: hook keeper

Hmm... A rodbuilder suggesting to use the guide as a hookkeeper? GASP!!! LOL
I've tried it and the line gets hung up a lot in that location. That was with other styles, but even with a folding HK, it can still get hung up. ----------------- AD Re: hook keeper

Alex,
Thanks, I should have said before that the rod is going to be used 99% for backtrolling and will seldom be cast. The reason I want a hook keeper is to keep from using a guide or the reel. When going back to the top of the run it is sometimes difficult to keep track of flying lures when operating the boat. The reason I suggested the butt guide location is because the rod can stay in the rod holder without the lure interfering. Thanks again, Larry Re: hook keeper

give it a whirl. Only time I saw issues was on a cast... never on retrieve. You ought to be in good shape. ----------------- AD Re: hook keeper

Larry,
If you put the hook keeper on the underside of the rod, I can't imagaine that you would have any issues. Roger Re: hook keeper

I assume you have used folding hook keepers before and understand them, but just in case. . . I have had trouble with folding keepers failing - they just don't seem that durable. Also, I dislike having to open them to use them-it's an inconvenience. I have had more trouble with them corroding than with other types. With all of these issues, they are also usually more expensive than other types. If I were trying to accomplish what you are I would try a simple, small, keeper like one of these: [batsonenterprises.com]. The drop shot keepers are very small, and if put on backwards, so the loop faces toward the tip of the rod, any line flowing over it toward the tip should flow without catching.
