Logan -
I think the overall best method of determining number and placement of guides is in the Library here under Static Guide Placement. If you follow those directions you will be in good shape.

Logan-If this is your first rod, building a recipe makes sense. You can get spacing recommendations from most of the blank manufactures. St Croix is a sponsor here so I can send you to their guide spacing chart:

Batson also publishes this information, as does Sage.

12 guides is a lot for a 9 foot rod. The usual rule of thumb is length in feet plus 1. So a 9 foot rod would have 10 guides plus a tip.

There is also a guide spacing calculator to down load if you search.

Any of the spacing recommendations get you close, and you can static test to confirm its really good. To be honest, the St Croix recs are usually right on the money. Maybe that's just my inability to grasp static testing, but their spacing seems to work very well with little adjustment.

Good luck.

Drew

The guide calculator works pretty good if you are just starting out.

Distance from tip
4.3 9.1 14.2 19.8 26.0 32.7 40.0 47.9 56.6 66.1 76.4

10 - guides
