How do you make guide wraps to have that camo look, rod has camo grips? Can I use a olive thread then use a felt marker for accents?
Thanks Jim Re: camo guide wrap

I'd use the varigated thread from Fishhawk. It alternates colors, so as you progress down the wrap, it changes nicely. Lots of color choices, too, so whatever pattern you're looking for should be covered.
Good luck! Re: camo guide wrap

I made a spinning rod using a camo blank for my son at X_Mas. The wraps were just olive and it came out nice. If you used olive with some brown and other muted color trim bands I bet it would look good. A felt permanent sharpie may work if the have the color you want or marbleize the wraps. I have used the olive thread, but to me, the best effect on a camo rod was the 000 natural silk that went transparent was the best.

I wrapped a lighter shade of olive (Madeira) onto a larger diameter blank scrap and then randomly hit it with black, dark green and brown Sharpies. Winding back onto the small diameter blank to complete the guide wraps yielded some really neat looking patterns. My son loves it! Alternatively, you can use a lighter shade green, wrap the guides and then sparingly apply color preserver in random patterns. When finished, there will be dark areas where there was no CP and brighter areas where you did apply CP. To mix it up, use different brands of CP; the finish penetration (and thus bleed through) will vary, yielding more shades of color. Re: camo guide wrap

I have did several for folks around here.
I used silk thread and it "disappeared" and you could see the blank and guide foot. Make sure you marked over the guide foot if you prep it any. It turned out good. The blanks I were using were camo blanks. Not sure your blanks are after rereading the post. Variegated thread works good too!! mikeb Home Town,Gretna VA Edited 1 time(s).
