Barkeepers friend mixed with enough water to make a paste to get the color back. and then polish with red rouge on a wheel for a high polish.

It says it leaves a protective coating on the surface. Will this have to be removed for finish to properly adhere to it?

I'm not sure that it actually leaves anything behind, but you can always wipe it with some alcohol, rinse and then dry thoroughly to make sure.
