Can i use straight metalic thread to do a guide wrap? I saw a color combo i love and would like to do it on one of my rods.

Mike is correct. Metallic is a tad tricker to work with (tension, handling, etc.), however it makes for a durable, good looking wrap.

One thing to remember when wrapping guides with metallic is to use a tension device that uses the spool, not the type that runs the thread between two discs. That will tend to unwrap the foil from the thread.

Another issue I've seen mentioned concerns the use of a color preserver. When using metallic threads, I do not use one. The only time I tried using a preserver on metallic thread, it dulled the effect of the thread. Or, at least, it appeared so to me. I have read where others agreed with me, and of some that disagreed. At any rate, I do not use color preserver with metallic thread and haven't noticed any ill effects for doing so.
Slainte,
