Been painting a bunch of blanks lately and have ran into a particular problem a few times. On 2 blanks the paint has been crackling on one axis for about 1ft.. Each blank has been sanded/deglossed and wiped clean (water and cloth) paying attention to keep my oily hands off of the blank. I have resanded each and removed the imperfections wiped clean (water and cloth again) and the problem returns.
My next plan is to prime first then paint the section. I am using Krylon fusion spray paint. Any suggestions. Re: Rod painting problem

Hal,
Try using a product called, '' BULLDOG'' . It is an adhesive promoter. I found it at my local auto paint dealer. It does come in a 15 oz. aresol can. Bill Ohio Rod Builders Canton, Ohio Re: Rod painting problem

Hal,I work in the auto trade and from my experience, paint not adhering to a surface,is 90% of the time caused by some source of silicone contamination.By sanding your just rubbing in.Seeing as how you're refinishing I would clean it good with something like acetone or DNA. Re: Rod painting problem

I believe the proper procedure is clean first, then lightly abrade, then coat. Re: Rod painting problem

Concerns can lie in the rags or towels that are used. Best to clean first the hit it with a scotch brite and dust off the debris.Use several light coats as opposed to heavier ones. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Rod painting problem

I'm with Bruce, I come from restorations. Water and oil don't mix. So it is not going to prep surface. Use DNA, mineral spirits, or auto body pre paint cleaner.
NEVER take cap off can ,NEVER put rag over opening, tilt can back and forth, anything on rag goes back in to can, Get what I'm saying ??? !!!! You said " ON AXIS " You wipe blank up & down length ? SO you drag contamination up & down axis Dave, PRRODS Re: Rod painting problem

I always prime before painting any of my blanks - works great - pay attention to primer color, usually white for me and you should be ok Re: Rod painting problem

Sometimes too thick of a coat can cause this problem , try again shooting a thinner coat , let dry , repeat process . Larry Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
