I am new to this game compared to most of you guys so forgive my question but how long of a bolt would I use for the 13' spey I am building? If your rod was 7' with an 8" bolt then I guess I would use a 14" bolt?? Maybe I could just use a rail road spike instead or a section of rebar.

Eric how much lead that is needed is a judgment call. I would have the reel on, line threw the guides with bait attached. Then I would place weight on the but section till it balances out. I the melt lead and pour it in to a cylinder just shy of the inside diameter of the butt section. Once cooled put inside the Butt.

The bigger question would be whether to use a fine thread or coarse thread bolt.

I hope you all realize I was kidding about the whole railroad spike thing, right?

It would work if you were using a English Carp pole or rod::)))
