In my rodbuilding carrier, started in 1999, now is arrived the time because I build a spigot insert from one piece fly/spinning/casting blank. I want to undertake in this practice and improve my tecnique to do that, because often I have difficult to find two pieces blank from all American brand blanks catolog (contrary to America in Italy a lot of people ask for two pieces rod) and another reason is, from my reading to do a spigot insert result an hard job, it require to be very very precision and for me that is very challenge, so following some questions to you to help me in this adventures:

What's the best material to do a spigot ? Fiberglass or Graphite ?
After to do a spigot, is necessary to renforce the blank with a wrap on it (spigot area) ?
The one pieces blank characteristics, will be modified a lot ?

Oversleeve ferrules have a lot to recommend them over spigot ferrules, particularly on small diameter blanks. Ralph O'Quinn has done articles on making and repairing both types in RodMaker Magazine.

There's far too much detail for me to go into within a forum post but I'll add this - If you're working with graphite blanks, you'd want to use glass for an over-sleeve and graphite for an inner-sleeve (spigot).

Properly done, a blindfolded person will never be able to distinguish a multi-piece from a single piece. The trick is to make the ferrule adequate for what it has to do. Making it overly strong (a common mistake) only adds unnecessary weight and can create a stress area that is prone to failure. Remember, the ferrule should flex with the blank. It need be no stronger nor stiffer than the area of the blank it is joining.
