Bill,
Someone in the fly rod industry once told me that Armorall breaks down the protective coating on the fly line. I don't recall who said this or when they said this or even if it still applies to fly lines at this time. I just remember someone from Cortland saying, DON'T Buzz Re: Armor all / fly line

Buzz
The search came up with posts that were 7 years old . That is why I asked. Bill - willierods.com Re: Armor all / fly line

Bill, don't use it. First it will ruin the coating on any fly line. Second, while the first few cast will really sail thru the guides the line will pick all kinds of debris greatly increasing the friction and wear on your guides. The best way to clean a fly line is mild soap and water, then treat with a dressing specific to the line manufacturer. They will last a lot longer doing it that way. Re: Armor all / fly line

I like the Zipcast. Doesnt leave anything sticky on the line that dirt sticks too. I wash mine in soap and water, stretch the whole thing then zipcast. Mighty slick through the guides Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 04/22/2010 05:03PM by Scott Bazinet. Re: Armor all / fly line

I was a car buff for quite a few years and used Armorall. I found out professionally that it gets into every nook and cranny you can think of. It will repel everything you don't want and everything you do want. Re: Armor all / fly line

ZipCast. The best line cleaner/dressing I've found in fifty years of searching. It's also the easiest to use. Re: Armor all / fly line

I tried Armorall on three of my fly lines a while back and interestingly, it ruined two of them and worked okay on one. One fly line became soft and mushy and was ruined, the other was a brand new line that cracked in weeks after using Armorall. I believe it's like playing "Russian Roulette " with your line and depends on the composition of the line you are cleaning. Another vote for Zipcast. It cleans the line, makes it float better, and makes it slick. The slickness doesn't last long, so I usually clean my lines just before my fishing trips. Like other posters above, two thumbs up for ZC. Re: Armor all / fly line

very interesting comments. I have been recommended Armor All a few times. I have read about Armor All working quite well. My 80 yr old friend, grew up fly fishing and has all his life, all over the world...says use it. He has used it for so long he can't remember. Apparently it never has damaged any of his lines. He has been fly fishing since single digit age. Grew up on Henry's Fork of the Snake River listening to fly fishermen around the pot bellied stove in the hardware store. Very experienced. Then read this and now I wouldn't try it on one of my fly lines for anything. Then get a Fly Logic rod and the Booklet I call it, prlnted like a magazine witih better quality paper....at the back of the booklet on cleaning your fly line it recommends "Armor All"
Go figure. Who is right" I dunno. Jim Re: Armor all / fly line

Well, I find it interesting to me.
After reading this...I am going to give the twin pack of Armor All with pads I bought...give them away. People above stated it ruined some lines. I never heard that before. I put my faith in you guys. In the round file it goes. Jim sorry I butted in Re: Armor all / fly line

For what it's worth...
From their websight: Armor All® Original Shine Protectant contains water-based silicone emulsions, surfactants, and ultraviolet light inhibitors, humectants, dispersants and gloss enhancers. I know when I spoke with 3M Scientific Anglers reps, they would ALWAYS discourage the use of Armor All for the above reasons. Of course they wanted you to buy their product, but 3M has deep pockets and their line cleaning systems are engineered second to none IMHO. At one point, I liked "Grease Lighting." For car care use Armor All, for fly line care stick with flyline products. Paul Re: Armor all / fly line

I used armorall in the 80's on my fly lines. It did make them cast well. Then I noticed my favourite Cortland DT7 sink tip had developed cracks on the whole length of the line. Now I stick with the fly line companies products. Re: Armor all / fly line

Paul:
I have a Cortland DT7 sink tip and it has developed cracks up and down its length, except I can't see any in the brown sink tip portions. The cracks display a bright green discoloration. This line is several years old and also a personal favorite, but I have never used Armor All on it. Re: Armor all / fly line

I guess you used a coating made for fly lines. Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
