Carbon Fiber grip question

Has anyone else had a problem with the natural (black) carbon fiber using the West Systems Epoxy #207, sanding smooth, then spraying on a top coat of Spar Urethane? My last few tries gave the grip sort of a greenish tint, not the true black color I started with. any similar experiences? Thanks-David Spence, Cape Custom Rods, Beaufort, NC

David -

I switched over to 207 because of that issue. I'm really happy with the way it looks. With a gloss top coat, it's flat beautiful.

The 207 is designed for applications where a clear finish is desired. It does have a little slower cure time, but about a 2x longer pot life.

It also seems to not take heat as well as the 205 if you use the heat shrink method. So apply your heat sparingly.

I've done a lot of them and haven't run into that sort of thing.

Yellow and black make green, so it stands to reason that if you're using the much more amber 205 hardener, that may be your problem.

The 207 isn't crystal clear by any means, but it is the clearest of the available hardeners that West System offers.

I use System 2000, and the left over epoxy on the foam plate after mixing a batch is absolutely crystal clear. I don’t know if it is better or worse than the West System epoxies but it works well for me.

david use the #207 and let it cure completely before sanding and you should not have any problems. the cold weather slows the curing. the 207 is designed to be clear and resist blushing
