Traveling I-40 to the Expo

Anyone driving to the Expo from the west using Interstate 40 should take note of the huge rock slide blocking both E and W lanes. DOT says it will take several months to clear. The detour is 53 miles longer than if you were using I-40. So one had better add an extra hour or so to the travel time if your ETA is late Friday afternoon,,,, don't want to miss the Reception.
You can read more about the rock slide here.

Jay,

If we are "lucky" they "might" have two lanes open by the time of the Expo. This slide has caused alot of confusion here in Western NC. I am going to Dayton, Ohio this weekend and am going via Cumberland Gap and Corbin, KY. I should know the latest by the time of the Expo.

It is possible they could have the east bound lanes open by Feb 20. They are having to blow more of the mountain side off in order to stabilize the area. Find out what you can and let us know. I am sure there will be a bunch of folks traveling to High Point from that direction. Don't have many Interstate choices from the west. Thanks Ed.

There has been a lot of rock slides in TN, too according to email alerts I get. I don't think they have closed any Interstates.

All indications are that that stretch will be open by the time the Expo rolls around. It's a little early to be too awful worried about detours and that sort of thing.

I-40 Update. Tonight WLOS-TV Asheville reported that it would be late March before I-40 at the TN/NC state line would reopen. If you are coming to HP via I-40 from TN-suggest you take I-40 to I-81 (to Johnson City, TN) to I-26 back to I-40 at Asheville and proceed on I-40 east to Winston-Salem, NC. It would be nice if this changed. Will keep this site posted.
