I am restoring an old Horrocks Ibbotson (think that's the name) bamboo fly rod for a buddy. All of the ferrules are loose and one is missing, so my plan is to remove and reattached the loose ferrules and replace the missing one. My questions are: First, am I correct that Rod Bond will work for the ferrules? Second, how do I measure in order to know what size ferrule to order? Do I size the male and female ferrules separately? I remember metal ferrules on all our rods when I was a kid, but I have never built or repaired a rod involving these old style ferrules. To answer your questions as best I can.
1) Yes, Rod bond will work with the ferrules. Be careful when removing the existing ferrules as there may be a pin that goes entirely through the ferrules or just through one side. Clean the ferrules really well and inspect them closely before trying to remove them. 2) I believe that the rod is measure across the flats at the ferrule location for sizing. 3) Ferrules usually come as a set. Angler's Roost on the left sells them as well as other vendors The classic fly rod forum has lots of information on restoration of Bamboo rods [www.classicflyrodforum.com] Chris Richer Iroquois ON Re: Ferrules on old bamboo rods

Essentially nothing to add except to note that when you remove the ferrules you will find that the bamboo has been rounded off to fit the original ferrules - effectively answering your question on how to measure the ferrules. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
