Hi,

What does line weight actually refer to?

I am trying to locate a 7 -7'6 spinning blank in two pieces, in line wgt of 4-10 lb or 6-12 lb. Which I am hoping to make into a spinning rod with a split grip.

But I can only locate the line weight I want in either the wrong length, in one piece, or too expensive. I am budgeting about
$50 -70 for the blank.

I will be targeting fish in the 2-5 lb range,

Does the heavy line weight mean the rod is overpowered for the smaller size fish?

I am happy to get a longer' blank and cut it down, but being a newbie, I don't trust myself yet.

I have searched the mudhole database and tried Batson with no luck yet?

That's a recommended line weight and is perhaps the least important of any of the ratings you see listed for a blank. However, it's safe to say that the higher the line rating the more powerful the blank so you'll still wise to look at it. The number you want to pay attention to is the power number. Generally this will be the 3rd number in the model number. For instance, let's say you see a model number that reads something like SB722. That's 72 inches in length and a "2-Power." Now as far as what constitutes a "2-Power" is a bit vague as these power ratings aren't the same from company to company. They're not even the same within the same company's product line. But if you find the series you want and know you want a lighter powered blank, you'll want to go with something with a lower power number.

I haven't updated these pages for about a year, so some blanks may have been deleted and newer blanks added.

Richard the guys here have made a couple of good suggestions.
Look around at the major brands and you'll find what you're looking for.
The vendors on the left have a large selection of various blanks.
But the Batson and St. Croix are a good choice.

What sizes guides would best suit this 7' blank?

I am also considering using either the VS guides from Batson, or similar brands with the Zirconia rings, as below.

Are they all good for saltwater use?

The stainless or black frames will hold up better in salt. Knowing what reel your using would help with the rest.

Hi Spencer,

So I would be Ok with any of the first two models mentioned above, as they have a SS base?

The reel is a 2500 Diawa spinning reel, with 6lb braid.
