hi all
i have a few questions to ask of you all, as i am new to rod building and most of the info has been gotten from the internet i thought i would try and renovate a rod first befor i go on to building from new, so i bought a rod at a garage sale that needs a bit of TLC, its a 2peice trolling/spin graphite daiwa rod of unknown name. i have removed all the guides and the from part of the handle. now my questions start. 1. how do i remove the grip, do i heat it up and twist it off or do i cut it carefully along its axis on both sides and break it off? 2. i want remove the original finish and take it back to the raw graphite, how do i accomplish this without scratching the original graphite finish? 3. i have thought about repainting the blank what would you guys recommend that i coat the blank with. i would like to use this rod again but am primarily using it to practice on so if it goes horribly wrong its no big loss. looking forwar to hearing from you all thanks keith Re: newby needing help

Not trying to be mean, but there is a search function on here and it works pretty well. I just painted my first one, which is like your build, a re-finish. All the info for the re-finish can be found with searching, and there are lot of opinions on it too. You can try to boil the handle to remove it. I tried it and either didn't have a deep enough pot to work with for this rod. I'd be ready to build yourself a new handle and reel seat in case it doesn't come off. Re: newby needing help

If the grips are cork or foam you can cut & sand them off easily enough.
If the handle is short enough you can boil the seat in water for 5-10 min and that should loosen the bond and you can pull it off. If not cut it off carefully with a dremel tool or hacksaw. You can sand the finish & paint off but don't get into the graphite (use 120 then 200 grit) See the LIBRARY section here (button up top) LOTS of stuff you need to read.
