Hello gentlemen, can you tell me the best way to strip the old varnish off an old bamboo rod. Can I just sand it down and redo the varnish. Thanks

Never sand, Scrape or use a product such as that mentioned above. Scraping is the best and safest way I have found.

Hint when scrapping always keep the scrapper, (I use a dull utility knife blade) at 90 % to the rod never let it rock back an forth. This will cause the edges to round. also lightly scrap an try not to cut into the enamel

You can buy citrus strip at Lowes or Home Depot. I follow directions and wipe it off after one hour with a paper towel and follow up with the green scrub pad. If neccessary go back again with another treatment, In doing it this way I have never had to scrape any except a few stubborn areas. However I will caution you when you are scubbing the blank be careful of splinters. Bamboo splinters can penetrate deeply.

Tom, why not use a chemical stripper?

Some may undermine the adhesive used to glue the strips together. Not all, but some.
