How many of you use CCS regularly?

How many of you actually compute an ERN for a blank before you build on it? Do you rely on data from the CCS data site for ERN values or do you actually do your own ERN? I am debating whether or not to set up some sort of a rig to do it. John God bless the troops and USA Re: How many of you use CCS regularly?

I use it extensively, but not always before I build. Re: How many of you use CCS regularly?

I'd hate to be without it now. I won't consider new blanks unless I get a chance to compare them with the system. I think being able to find the AA on spinning rods is very valuable. Stan Grace Helena, MT "Our best is none too good" Re: How many of you use CCS regularly?

What are you looking for in the AA on the spinning rods? Re: How many of you use CCS regularly?

Every blank and rod that comes through the door.

How do you compute the ERN for 8 wt and higher fly blanks since the ERN is not linear (slope is not constant in table b part 1) with the number of cents loaded? Do you extrapolate from the 6.xx numbers because the delta ERN is .12 to .13 while the delta for ERN in the 4.xx is .15. Maybe it just is not that big of a difference at the higher ERNs. The ERN, TP. and PR scales run from zero to 200. See the RodMaker article on the URRS (Universal Rod Rating System.
The scales are linear within each of the designated limits. Re: How many of you use CCS regularly?

I use it on every blank before I build up. Most of my finished rods have the ERN and AA labeled, unless the client does not want it.

The Rosetta Stone Chart is on the photo page somewhere under my name. It has the ERN power ratings up to 200 I think. It was in Volume 6 #4. I'd have to look and see which issue had the URRS.

I want to know what the comparable ratings of the the available blank actions are. Fast action blanks usually allow greater casting distance with light lures than slower action blanks allow. ERN is still a great tool to compare blank power but on spinning rods I'm more interested in finding fast action blanks to build on. Individual manufacturers vary widely in their designation of action making meaningful comparisons between brands impossible. I measure and record every single blank and rod that comes into my shop for ERN and AA. On fly rods I measure the CCF as well. I find these measurements every bit as helpful for making comparisons on power and action as feet and inches do for comparing length.
The old system of Fast, Moderate and Slow just has far too few points of resolution. And the manufacturers' power ratings like 1-power, 2-power, etc. would be fine except every company uses a different system for those power ratings. Even in the same company you cannot compare power ratings between a bass blank and something they list as a walleye blank. ERN is across the board and the same for all rod types. The CCS is the Holy Grail of rod comparison measurements for those who know how to use it. I have written an article on just that topic which I think Tom has printed in the newest issue. I think it will open the eyes of a lot of people. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/20/2009 11:12AM by Bill Colby. Re: How many of you use CCS regularly?

There is also a "Rosetta Stone" chart under the "Common Cents Info" link on the upper left of this page. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
