Cloudy Flex Coat Lite

This is my first time using flex coat lite as a first coat step and it turned cloudy. I use a syringe type for accurate part a and b mixing as well as an automatic epoxy mixer. I have never had this problem in the last 4 years of building fishing rods. Has anyone run into this problem? If so, is it safe to put the flex coat regular over top of the lite? When it fully cures, will it fully cure clear or will it always remain cloudy?

David,

The possible source of cloudiness may be from the syringe you used. If it contained silicone, which most medical syringes do, this is a possibility of the cause. As to if it will remain, I will let a more experinced builder comment. But if my memory serves me right, I believe it will. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Odds are very good that it wasn't mixed thoroughly. Odds are also very good that it will remain exactly the way it is.

I"m with Jim - incomplete mixing usually results in a cloudy, swirly looking mix.

I had the same problem about 5 years ago. I work in a shop where the air temp is controlled by mother nature. At the time, it was cold. I fought it over and over but could see the Flex Coat go cloudy in the cup shortly after mixing. I tried another batch, experimented with mixing times, another batch...use new mixing consumables, another batch, over and over again each time changing something. If my change didn't work, I put it back and tried something else. Just couldn't make it work right. Then I changed epoxy. Come to find out, some amine hardeners are affected by cold moreso than others. This was my case. Another epoxy worked fine. I'm not saying this is your problem as in most parts of the country it's fairly warm now. Just relaying my experience.
