Plate seat question...??

I have a guy who has a 15' surf rod and he wants the reel seat to be adjustable and able to move up and down the blank. He wants me to cut off the existing seat, shrink wrap the blank, and install a seat that screws and unscrews to itself and clamps on to the blank. He wants to be able to unscrew it and move it down for when his wife is using the rod. So my question is, would you use a plate type seat for that? Any suggestions on how to set this up?? Thanks

A spin seat can be made to adjust all along the blank or on cork or any handle unit.

The trick will be putting something on the blank that the plate seat can be screwed into.

Take a look at Mud Hole's collet surf rod seat. It can be loosen at either end and slid anywhere along the handle and then retightened in place. This could be the ticket for what your customer is wanting.

Kyle:
Look at the photo page. Phillipson seat. This can be made from a graphite spin seat, buy cutting out the section the reel feet lay onto the seat. This way when the reel is tighten down it lays on the blank, cork, or what ever and presses down on it thus making it tight [www.rodbuilding.org] A Tennessee handle and rings may be to small for a surf reel.

A 15' rod may have a handle that is too large in diameter for most movable reel seats. When using a movable reel seat, you will need to consider the size of the users hands.

A second issue is the handles taper. Movable reel seats work quite well on UK style parallel handles. Not quite as well on tapered handles.
