I have a customer that wants a short musky rod. I have cut a little off blanks here and there but this one will need 12" taken off the butt. Does anyone see a problem with this? It seems like a lot.
Thank you, Marc Re: Cutting a blank

You will lose a good deal of power and the action will become much slower.
I'd mock the blank up in the way it will be, as if you had cut those 12 inches off, and see how it handles and feels. You may still like it, you may not. The best option is usually to buy a blank in the length that you require, with the action and power needed. ............. Re: Cutting a blank

Sounds like too much of an alteration to me.
A couple of inches on either end of a blank is acceptable to the customer requirements. But at 12 inches, I think you are looking at a different blank. Paul I fish therefore I am. www.hookeduprods.com Re: Cutting a blank

Just a thought but if he cut 6" from each end would that mitigate at least some of the power loss and action loss? I've never tried it but it might serve the purpose... Thanks, Chad Huderle Huderle Custom Rods Prior Lake, MN Re: Cutting a blank

Cutting from both ends will still have the same large effect, just in different areas. The action will still become slower. The power loss won't be as much, but the lure casting weight range will then be affected.

Try to talk him into a new blank. If you cut like Tom says he may not like it.
take a look around and list several that may work for him. Bill - willierods.com Re: Cutting a blank

The problem is that no one is making short musky blanks any more. He wants an old-school short jerk bait rod.
Thanks for all the feedback. Marc Re: Cutting a blank

Marc - what kinda specifications is he looking for?
perhaps somebody can suggest a blank that will fit his needs, even if its not labeled a musky blank Re: Cutting a blank

Six feet or less capable of working jerkbaits in the 2-6 ounce range. Re: Cutting a blank

St Croix makes a 6'3 you could chop 3" off of and not adversley affect much. It is a blank more than capable as I use them for bottom rods here in florida.
2M63XHF I am sure others will chime in as to other options as well. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
