Florida Pier Rod

I'm a WI guy who recently got a taste of FL pier fishing and I am hooked. Is there someone out there that can lend some advise on what weight rod would be good for someone targeting things like Snook, Mackeral, small Tarpon, or sea trout. Rod blank brands (and models) would be helpfull too. I enjoy casting jigs, spoons, and swimbaits with spinning tackle.

Thank you,

Marc

Hey Marc, I have grown up fishing piers in the northern gulf where the game is cobia and king mackeral, with the occasional tarpon or blackfin. There are a wide variety of blanks in use on these piers. Our rods are usually 8 to 9 feet 15 to 30 lbs. A couple things to look at when deciding on a blank is glass or graphite, do you want a fast action blank for working a jig or a slower blank for live bait, and of course price. If have the opportunity try to find a dealer that will let you put your hands on a variety of blanks and try to find something that feels comfortable to you. The most popular blanks used on our piers up here are gators, rainshadow, and seekers
