Split Bamboo SurfRod Question
Posted by: Bob Swindell (---.hsd1.fl.comcast.net)

I recently purchased three Split Bamboo Surf Rods at a garage sale. I plan to restore them. All three are 8' to 9' in length ...... two piece ...joined by a 7/8" ferrule. The male end of the ferrule is attached to the foregrip and the female end is attached to the handle. The foregrip and handles are all solid wood. The female ferrule has a reel seat built in to it.

Here is my problem and question. One of the rods is missing the female ferrule and handle. I want to purchase a complete ferrule assembly with a reel seat attached. I am also interested in purchasing a "wooden handle" if these are available. I have searched the internet but to date haven't found either ....1.) 7/8" ferrules with real seats or 2.) wooden handles. If anyone has any thoughts on this I surely would appreciate your comments. Thanks for your review and any comments.

Bob;
Old bamboo surf rods aren't very collectable, but you might try www.clarksclassicflyrodsforum just to see if anyone there might have an idea for you.There are some bamboo dealers who mostly deal in flyrods, but ,again, one of them might have something laying around, do a google search to find out who they are and how to contact them. Worst case scenario is you might have to have a handle built for it if you aren't equipped to make it yourself, the ferrule will be the hard part depending on what it's made of. I would guess chrome plated brass, in which case Amtac or Jann's might have one, if nickel silver then it will have to be made special, I know none of the current makers of nickel silver ferrules go that large.

Few shops carry the old type ferruled seats anymore. But there are still some around. Coastal tackle shops that have engaged in rod building for a long time may have some of the old hardware you need. I'm going to send you the email of a guy that just bought out a tremendous inventory of very old HD surf and boat rod hardware. He may have something you can use.
