I am looking to do along butt wrap on a rod. All I can do is a diamaond wrap which is getting pretty boring. What else can I do that is not too complicated?

Tiger Wraps

A chevron is done the same way as a diamond, except instead of wrapping threads on both sides of the center, you wrap to one side, either inside or outside the center.

I agree St. Johns Cross was my first closed wrap and it came out very nice. I found it to be easier to pack and line up more square then my latest chevron wrap.

Being new at crosswraps myself I shied away from the "complicated" stuff for quite a while too. My first attempt at something other than a diamond was a 3D box wrap; you'll see one posted on the www.leapinbass.com site that David Boyle posted above, it's rather easy and you can even get nice results on a small diameter blank. If the diamonds are getting boring then you probably are really ready to move on to that "complicated" stuff like the others have suggested. Look around in the photo gallery, get "Decorative Wraps" by Billy Vivona, pick up some dowels and a few spools of thread, and just go for it :)

By the way; for closed wraps the straight dowels will be kind of like cheating, you want something with a taper to it so you can work out the spacing and see if you get it right. I have a few "white elephant" rods I didn't care for that now have wraps all over them and on top of each other.

why dose everyone use madriea thread for wraps can you use other polyester thread and get the same afect?

The reason people use MAdeira is because I posted a ton of photos of wraps using Madeira thread way back, and it caught on with others and spread. Before I was posting all those wraps, people were only using regular rodbuilding thread, VERY FEW were looking into alternative sources for threads. If oyu post enough photos, on enough forums, and tell people enough times that MAdeira Polyneon is the best thread for DEcd WRaps - people will eventually believe and follow suit.

I tried the American flag once. It is pretty easy but I almost had to change history. I got too carried away and had 15 stripes instead of 13. Being the good American I am, I changed the wrap. Can you imagine the cost of all of those history books?

Keep in mind that ALL the other wraps that you see out there....are derived from diamonds and chevrons....pick a pattern you like and wrap it. Trial and error is how we all learn.

I recommend buying an "Easy Button" from Staples....when your done with your next wrap, complicated or not, and u see how much better it was, than your LAST wrap....Hit teh button!!!!!!!!

I can say that after 2 wraps I moved on to a closed wrap, nothing spectacular, but it turned out nice. The more you do the easier it gets, I am moving on to harder things now, but if you are planning on doing many I would reccommend the visual wrap software, I dont own it yet, but will by the end of the week. I have seen enough of it to know that it will make your life easier. you can preview and fine tune your color combos on it, and that is worth the price alone.

One of the simplest wraps in the world......reverse chevron but if done well, it looks very well. Trim it out with one single band of the trim color down the midline when done.
