I am building a 9wt catfish/pike rod. I am thinking if useing:
12,10 strippers and then 7's on up, ceramics. Would anybody think 7's are to small and think 8's would be better. A nine wt sink tip line would be used most of the time. Cheers Ron. Re: 9wt catfish/pike rod guide size

Depends on what size connections you need to pass. If none, just the fly line, then 7's are fine.

If your leader to line connection is very low profile, I don't see why you couldn't use size 6's as running guides. And if your using a sink tip, chances are your leader will be so short that the connection will never see the guides while fishing. Also, the sink tip portion of the line is smaller in diameter than it would be if it were a full floating line. I have a fly rod I throw an 8 wt. floating line on occasionally and it has size 6's and works just fine. For the stripping guide, I would personally go with a size 16 especially with a 9 wt. line. Just my $.02. Re: 9wt catfish/pike rod guide size

Yes thanks for your 2 cents, I use a short leader so knots are not a issue. I will go with your wisdom.

If your fly line has interchangeable tips, then an 8 is better. If it's a 15' sink tip with no loop connections, then 6 or 7 works well.
