For those of you that build fly rods do you put a "tamer" guide about 4 inches in front of the stripper? What are the feelings on this, does it really benefit the rod?
Thanks, Tom Church Re: "tamer" guide

I really like it. On all the fly rods I've built, it's always increased casting distance. Sometimes it helps just a little; sometimes it helps quite a bit. Re: "tamer" guide

The last 7 wt I built for a customer, I demoed the casting distance with and without a taming guide. If you watch the line without a taming guide while the caster is shooting line, you can see a pronounced belly in the line. With the taming guide in place, there is no belly and the line is very level when shooting. He was skeptical at first but really sold when I demonstrated this.
