This post is in reference to one of the answers to the caution w/ extreme camo blanks post. The answer was to use max seal over painted rod blanks. I've never heard of this product before so, I was hoping to get some info on this product. Thanks to John Martines I now know it's a hybrid water based poly but, that's all. So, anymore info would be greatly appreciated because I can't fine any info online.<>Dave

It's a water based polyurethane finish that is non yellowing and very hard, yet flexible and makes a great high gloss finish for wood grips/seats. I haven't used it on rods but I know several that do and love it! It's manufactured by a California company called Polymer Products [portal.wowway.net]

Year before last at the Big Show I believe that Ken Preston taught a class and said that he uses this stuff instead of color preserver. He said that it works great for that application. I need to try it my self. It seems that you can use it on almost anything dealing with rod building.

I have had great success applying a spray coat of Krylon Crystal Clear over paint enamel paint to act as a sealing barrier. Then I coat the blank with Permagloss which is a great thin durable finish.

I will look into Max Seal as I am always interested in new products and Max was my Dad's name.

I think I remember Ken saying it is used to seal Bridges when sand blast them. Pretty durable stuff!!

i have used it to topcoat blanks after painting them. it is water thin and easy to work with. you can wipe it on or dip it. if you dip it hang it tip down and the excess will roll down the tip. it should not remove the paint or covering like permagloss. it is much easier to use and clean up. it will be dry in a few hours. multiple coats are fine as well.

David G.

I use it exclusively after a paint job. Holds up just as well as PG without the smell, and water clean up. Plus if you have extra, you don't have to pitch it just pour it back into the bottle. AAAANNNNDDDDD, you don't have the humidity problem, it cures by evaporation. I've applied as JP, and also by putting 2 piece blanks on the drier and brushed on with a spong brush. Well actually not brushing, but using a wide sponge brush and aplying just like you would epoxy. Works great!!!

Who else out there has used it as CP? Ken Preston turned me on to it, but I have been using a couple of other products after noticed it did alter the color slightly versus another "standard" CP that everyone knows and loves.

Sorry Dave, I meant to send you an E-mail but I think it was locked. Mr. Bartlett is the one to thank. I used this over a brown oil based stain on a old Conolon fiber blank and it's great stuff and so easy to use it takes all the fun out of it, LOL.

err why is it a secret who sells it? Please email me to if you know the best place to get it. Thanks.

On another note i believe this is the stuff alot of lure builders are using to coat jigs and things like this to make the finish more durable.
