Diamondite Problems Resolved!

Just to let you guys up north (I am in PA) know that I heated my work area up to 75 degrees and then started my finish process and had no problems. The pitting I had experienced was due to the finish being too thick in my 58 degree basement and even though I lightly warmed the "resin" part by the time it got on the rod it was already cooling down so my bubbles were rising and popping but the finish didnt have enough movement left in it to mend the craters. I guess we all look forward to warmer weather and even our finish does too. I also tried using a heat gun and it made the finish do funky things.

Even here in Tampa, I keep a little space heater in my shop during the cooler months. I never apply finish until the thermometer reads between 75 and 80.

IMO, methodology is MUCH more important than brand. Although, I most definitely have my favorite finishes ... ALL of them work for me without problems. I like to believe it is my dedication to cleanliness, precision, consistency PLUS understanding, and meeting, the product's needs.

Congratulations on your resolution ... it is WONDERFUL when you finally get that last step of rod building down to a science.

I had the same issue last night. Applied some diamondite and had some ridges and pits - but only on one end of the rod.

The difference? On one part of the rod I had put a lamp over it for it to cure, on the other I didn't. The section that didn't have the lamp had some small pits and was a little wavy. I'm guessing the heat made the diffference.

Going to recoat tonight with a space heater in the room and see if that makes a difference. Room temp last night was about 65 degrees.
