Hi Ya'll - got a quick question -

I have done a few heart wraps in the past, but that was a long time ago! Now I have to do two for a guy and his gal -

My problem is every time I do the wrap out of Advanced Rod Techniques by Dale Clemens, it dont look very much like a heart - it is elongated - after five tries I have gotten a little frustrated.

It needs to be square. To find the spacing use pi x diameter of the blank.

This is the method I use - The circumfrance of the blank is the distance from the center of design to center of design. I take an index card wrap it around blank, mark diameter and cut. Remeasure cut piece as to diameter. This will give spacing on the top of blank.
For the 180 marks, fold cut piece in half for starting mark, then unfold and mark the rest of blank to be wrapped. This method is very simple. Any distance longer than diameter will produce an elongated design and any distance shorter than diameter will be compressed.

Make sure...

1) your spacing is square.
2) the first diamond that creates the "V" is large enough
3) make the "box" square
4) follow correct pass progression

My question is the diameter WHERE? At the center of the wrap, at the tip end, or butt end of the wrap. This is the confusing part to me, the rest of it I get.

BTW, The "Hearts" wrap is one of the easiest wraps in Dale's
book. The key is to make the beginning diamond and the "box"
the best size for the number of passes for your blank.

In Dale Clemens' book "Custom Rod Thread Art", page 7 is the method for spacing the designs onto the rod. Scott's and the one I use are the same as described on page 7. Scott's method is math (3.14 X diameter rod) and mine is a card cut to wrap around rod. After the space is determained use the method on pages 254 & 255 of "Advanced Custom Rod Building" to layout the center points.
The first design will be square, but as you go toward the tip the design will be elongated as the rod gets smaller in diameter. Depending on the length of the wrap this can be re- measured as you layout the center points. Another method was to average the diameters at the beginning and the end of the wrap and use the average as the spacing. I hope this does not confuse you, these methods are in in one or several of Clemens's books. Some of the butt wraps went almost to the first guide, that was the reason for re-measuring the diameter.

On some long wraps or on blanks with a lot of taper.
The "taper offset" layout (pg. 21 CRTA) is used if you plan to close
the wrap.

On page 71 of "Decoritve Wraps" by Billy Vivona he shows the Heart
pattern and provides spacing measuments and has a good explanation.
