rod tip removal

Taken many tips off with lighter to soften adhesive. Trying to make spiral rod for friend. Rod is a Pete Mania 7'4" from BPS. Really heated tip up but won't budge. Don't want to mess with guides until I can get tip off. Any suggestion? Thanks -Bill

Keep at it carefully. Get yourself some leverage via a large paperclip bent into a 'removal tool'. Pull on the top at the same time you are applying uniform heat around the tip. Worst case scenario it will be a 7'3" spiral wrapped rod. LOL

Tie a rubber band through the ring and attach to a nail on the bench.Pull the rod to streatch the rubber band then heat the tube while rotating the rod.The tip will fly off as soon as enough heat is present and be on the blank no longer than necessary. If this wont work you can split the tube with a dremel cutting wheel andd peal it off.

I heard third or fourth hand that Pete 'insisted' that they use epoxy on the tips of rods that would bear his name.

Apparently he'd had problems with the hot melt applications in the past.

May be why this one is giving you troubles. Takes a bit more heat with the epoxy.

Good Luck!

Buddy

Check the rod over good before putting too much time in on it. I saw several of these at the Bass Pro in Gurnee, IL where the reel seat would break loose and spin if you barely touch it.

I have a small eye bolt (half opened to make a hook) screwed into the end of my bench. Hook the guide into the eye bolt and apply straight pressure while heating.
