Wondering if anyone has built a heavy Mag Bass casting blank as a musky rod? I am looking at a MBC846, 7'0" , 0.615" butt dia, 6.5 tip dia, blank weight 4 oz., fast action. The specs look close to a lot of musky blanks, but I don't build many bass casting rods so I haven't used this blank.
Any info would be great. Thanks, Marc Re: Mag Bass blank as Musky rod?

It'll work just fine. We've got a couple out with our customers who are fishing for 40lb-60lb catfish with this stick.

Just make sure the lure weight rating is appropriate for what you are casting, musky lures are huge and getting larger. Have you seen St. Croix's 7'9' XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXH blank? There is a Rodmaker article on building musky rods, and except for small muskie, the author did not feel it was up to the task. Re: Mag Bass blank as Musky rod?

The thing I would caution about is using too light of a rod for musky results in longer fights with the fish, which GREATLY increases fish mortality rates. This has been shown to be a huge factor in successfull CPR musky fishing. I would strongly encourage conservation minded musky fisherman to make sure they use enough rod for the job. If you are fishing small river musky that might be enough stick, as they don't tend to run as big as a lake fish, but that's about it. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
