roller guide direction

Which way do they go? These are the rollers where the roller is on one side and the frame with a hole is on the other side. I looked through I don't know how many pages of pictures and I see them both ways. I checked some websites of manufatured rods and they also have them both ways. Does the roller go toward the reel or the tip? Why? Does it really matter?

Using AA's or Aftco HD's, I put the rollers towards the tip, just because the line opening in the other side is larger. I have customers that have landed 200lb+ fish with with the rollers mounted towards the reel with no ill effects.

Steve: I was told to mount AFTCO rollers so the writing was toward the angler. John

John's post is right and made me look at an HD set and realize that my "rollers towrd tip" advise isn't 100% correct. The double roller stripper s/b mounted with the rollers towards the reel. the running guide rollers go towards the tip on the HD's. Bigfoot & wind on guides have the rollers to the rear.
