Guide spacing

I am building a 7' mh light saltwater rod, the blank is an amtak asws70mh. I am trying to put eight guides and a tip top, and having trouble with the guide spacing. I had previously been using a guide chart from cabelas for my spacing, but there is nothing on the chart using that many guides. The guides are a 30-20-16-12-10-8-8-8 and 8 tip. could someone give me alittle advice on the spacing on so many guides. I would just reduce the amount, however the person I'm building for requested that many. Thanks for any suggestions.

That's about the right number of guides, actually. Are you building a casting or spinning rod? Either way, you only need about 3 guide sizes - get rid of all the intermediate sizes as they don't do a single thing for you.

There are two articles in the online library here, one for casting rods and one for spinning rods (New Guide Concept). Give them a look and then come back with specific questions and we'll help.

Thanks Tom. I'm actually building a spinning rod. The guides are a guide set that I purchased at the request of the guy I'm building it for. So I'm kind of locked into them. But I'll give the static test a run, I haven't tried it before so I may ask again later, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Read the article on the New Guide Concept layout and see if you can make those guides work. I doubt you can get a perfectly straight line path (you should select the guides after determining line path, not the other way around) but you might be able to at least get close.
