Am I beating a dead horse checkboard handels not quite aligned

Ok, I did a search and pulled up some info....But still if I could have some clarification that would be appreciated.

I use custom tackle jigs to cut the cork into 4ths and 8ths. Ive seen people sucessfully do checkboards with these, so I am sure it is user error.

Anyhow, my first checkboard was done with slicing the cork rings, gluing the rings, zip tie and let dry. post drying I would drill the appropriate size in the new ring and make the handel...Problem is the checkers wouldnt quite line up and the more I sanded the gap looked bigger....

Well, I read some post and decided to go this route....Drill Cork, Cut cork into 4th's (i am going to get a sucessful run before going the 8ths)...Glue cork, zip tie....then put on a mandrell align and clamp....

Am I missing anything....

Jeffrey,

Try slicing the 2 rings in 1//2( For example 2 different color burls into 1/4" thick pieces) and glue one of each color together and put into the pie jig and slice. Just flip every other piece and you will have a perfectly lined up checkerboard.

Mr. Mike.... That is freaking brilliant!

I've been working way too hard and creating far too much waste to get good checkers. I'm embarrassed to to say that I never thought of this.

Maybe Mikes' wife made him do it that way to conserve some of the time he has left!

Mike is doing a Workshop at the ICRBE on Tips and Tricks. My money says he knows more Tips and Tricks than that . And I agree with Mick, that one was brilliant !! Thanks Mike.

Mike when you make your rings do you just glue the rings at that time or do you put the rings together to make the checkboard...Thanks!
